Report illegal use of fireworks

Members of the public can only use fireworks in their back garden or on private property. Only licensed professionals can use fireworks in a public place. Used irresponsibly, fireworks can cause damage to property and significant harm to people and animals.

When can fireworks be used?

Fireworks can be used in the UK any time from 07:00 to 23:00.

Exceptions are:

• Bonfire night: 07:00 to midnight
• New Year’s Eve, Diwali and Chinese New Year: 07:00 to 01:00 the following day

Who can use fireworks?

• anyone over 18 can buy, carry or use fireworks

It is an offence to throw or set off any firework in a street or public space.

It is also an offence to tamper with or modify fireworks.

Report illegal use of fireworks

If someone is using fireworks illegally, report it:

• online — fill in the general enquiry form
• by phone — call 101
• in person — visit a police station

Bonfires

If someone is burning bonfires regularly this may be considered a nuisance.
