Securing your windows

Read our window security tips relating to casement, roof lights, sash, and tilt-and-turn windows.

Fitting window locks to your accessible windows will reduce the chances of being burgled. It will slow down the intruder and make it much more difficult if they target your home.

Buy a security-accredited product

If you are considering replacing your windows, always use a security-accredited product to a standard such as PAS 24:2022.

These windows are tested to British standards and are insurance approved. Secured by Design accredit such product.

Casement windows

Casement windows of all materials have a combination of one or more side or top-hung opening frames set within an outer fixed frame.

To secure your casement window, consider fitting:

  • at least one casement window lock in each opening frame
  • two locks opposite each hinge, if you live in a high-crime area or the opening casement is bigger than one metre
  • the locks to the opening or leading edge of the window, if it has a scissor-type hinge fit

Rooflight and skylights

A rooflight is an openable or fixed metal or timber-framed window set into a sloping or flat roof to allow daylight into a room. Low-level flat roofs tend to be more attractive to intruders.

To secure your roof light:

  • make sure low-level roof lights are fitted with locks
  • consider fitting a security grille beneath the roof light, if the risk warrants it

Sash windows

Sash windows usually haves two sashes that slide up and down inside a frame.  The upper sash is on the outside and runs in front of the lower sash.

To secure your sash window, consider installing:

  • sash stops in pairs – as these can prevent someone opening the window enough to climb through
  • dual screws – either a full- or half-threaded bolt to bolt the two sashes together

Master Locksmith can fit purpose-made locks for sash windows.

Tilt-and-turn windows

uPVC tilt-and-turn windows can either open fully inwards or tilt open for ventilation without compromising on security.

To secure your tilt-and-turn windows:

  • use the multi-point locking system to lock up
  • do not leave the window fully open, if it can be avoided

Use Secured by Design’s product search to find a security-accredited window.
