Safeguard your flat

All residents need to keep eyes and ears out for themselves and their neighbours.

More than one in three households live in purpose-built blocks of flats or houses of multiple occupancy in Bristol.

There are also up to 100,000 students, many of whom live in student accommodation while they attend one of the four main universities in Bristol and Bath.

For some people living in urban areas of Avon and Somerset and near multiple neighbours, safety can be a genuine concern.

Tips to secure your building

Close any communal doors

One of the most common ways for a burglar to enter a shared property is by following an occupant into the building.

For maximum security:

  • make sure that when you go through the main door, it closes behind you
  • do not let anyone in that you do not recognise – even if they claim to be visiting another resident, ask them to ring that person for entry

If it does not close properly and you rent your flat, report it to your management agent or landlord so it can be repaired quickly.

Lock any ground-floor windows

Ground-floor or basement flats can be particularly at risk from break-ins, especially those with unimpeded access to a window or patio door.

To secure your windows you could install:

  • laminated glass or security film to any windows – to obscure the view into your ground floor flat
  • window opening restrictors – to make sure the window cannot be picked and unlocked from outside

If you have sash windows, consider installing sash stops to prevent anyone opening the window wide enough to climb through.

Some patio doors can also be an easy target. Consider adding a secondary lock like a metal pin inserted through the doorframe.

If you are looking to improve the security of existing windows, use a Locksmith registered with the Master Locksmiths Association.

Do not leave parcels unattended

Shared postal areas in flats can potentially offer more opportunities for thieves to steal your parcels, particularly if that area is unmonitored by CCTV.

When ordering larger packages, make sure you are home when they arrive. If you will be out for the day, try to change the delivery date or ask a trusted neighbour to take it in for you.

If you have had a parcel stolen, or have witnessed the theft of a parcel,

Check the security on outbuildings

Keep cycle stores, bin stores, sheds and other covered areas locked and secured. These hidden spaces can attract loitering and lead to anti-social behaviour, especially after dark.

Maintain the boundary

Check that the managing agent or landlord cuts shrubs and planting back regularly, to make sure they do not obscure anyone from view or interfere with lighting or CCTV.

If you notice something is not working properly or if a light is out, let the managing agent or landlord know so it can be fixed as soon as possible.
