What makes a good police officer?
Read about an officer’s typical day, the ideal personal attributes for a good officer and Avon and Somerset Police’s expectations.
As a police officer, no two days are ever the same. You will work at the heart of the community, helping people and keeping them safe. When incidents occur, you will attend and take control.
You might spend your day on patrol by foot, bike or car responding to calls from the public or engaging directly with local residents and groups. You will build knowledge of the area you cover, identifying people or places at risk and working to prevent crime before it happens.
On a day-to-day basis, you could be:
- keeping the peace at events or disputes
- calming tense situations
- supporting people affected by crime or anti-social behaviour
- gathering evidence
- taking statements
- carrying out interviews
- following legal procedures to build strong case files
Some days may involve making arrests, delivering difficult news or appearing in court to give evidence.
Through it all you will act with professionalism, care and integrity treating people fairly and supporting them through what may be one of the worst days of their life.
What do we need from you?
