Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner

The role of the PCC is to be the voice of the people and hold the police to account. They are responsible for the totality of policing.

The PCC has been elected by the public to hold the Chief Constable and the force to account, effectively making the police answerable to the communities they serve.

Crimestoppers

Crimestoppers is an independent charity helping law enforcement to locate criminals and help solve crimes. They have an anonymous 24/7 phone number, 0800 555 111, that people can call to pass on information about crime; alternatively, people can send information anonymously via the Giving Information Form.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC)

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) oversees the police complaints system in England and Wales and sets the standards by which the police should handle complaints. It is independent, making its decisions entirely independently of the police and government.

Police forces deal with the majority of complaints against police officers and police staff. They consider appeals from people who are dissatisfied with the way a police force has dealt with their complaint.

Police forces must refer the most serious cases to the IOPC. They may decide to investigate such cases independently, manage or supervise the police force’s investigation.

Lighthouse Victim Care

Lighthouse offers an enhanced service to vulnerable, intimidated or persistently targeted victims of crime and Anti Social Behaviour, and victims of serious crime. 

The Bridge

The Bridge is a Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC). They offer medical care, emotional and psychological support, and practical help to anyone who has been raped or sexually assaulted.

The Crown Prosecution Service

The Crown Prosecution Service prosecutes criminal cases investigated by the police in England and Wales. the CPS:

  • Advises the police on cases for possible prosecution
  • Reviews cases submitted by the police for prosecution
  • Where the decision is to prosecute, determines the charge in the more serious and complex cases
  • Prepares cases for court
  • Presents those cases at court
