Date of request: 2 January 2021
Reference: 007/21

Request

Please could you make available all training materials used to train officers in emergency first aid starting from 01/01/2018 and finishing with 31/12/2019.

If you could include presentations, details of online training used, pamphlets, manuals, and anything else you would deem as relevant that would be great.

Response

First Aid training delivered in-house by Avon and Somerset Constabulary follows the College of Policing programme.

The First Aid Learning Programme is approved by National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC) Lead for First Aid and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), who have agreed on the minimum standards and quality assurance processes set out in this specification. The Programme is made up of five modules defined in the National Curriculum learning standards which are aligned to relevant HSE training standards pertaining to first aid.

First Aid Learning Programme meets the learning needs of all officers and police staff requiring first aid training. The learning standards for the five modules have been fully mapped to HSE requirements to support forces in meeting their legal obligations in delivering this training. The five modules are listed below:

Module 1 Basic Life Support
Module 2 First Aid Skills Police; HSE Emergency First Aider at Work plus the required Refresher Training
Module 3 First Aid Skills Custody
Module 4 First Aid at Work (HSE FAW); Initial and Requalification
Module 5 Enhanced First Aid Skills

Unfortunately we are unable to supply you with any hard copy information regarding this. However the following media, which can be found in the public domain, is also utilised in our delivery of First Aid training to staff:

  • “First Aid made easy” (Edition Eleven 2019) by Nigel Barraclough Paramedic CertEd.
  • St John Ambulance, British Red Cross and public provision video 999 ‘What’s your emergency’.
